Event Details
More than 250 people packed the beautiful Rotunda Room of The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History on March 18, 2006 to celebrate The Legacy Associates Foundation's 8th Annual Scholarship Dinner titled "Real Solutions for Real Empowerment". The dinner, created to increase awareness in the community about LAF's services and programs, featured Kwame Jackson (www.kwamejackson.com) from the reality television show, The Apprentice, as the keynote speaker and Karen Dumas from the popular radio show, Upfront with Karen Dumas as the Mistress of Ceremonies.
With the help of dedicated sponsors including Comerica Bank, Strather and Associates, State Farm Insurance, Skillman Foundation, Fifth Third Bank, G.R. N'Namdi Art Gallery, New Detroit Coalition, Beaumont Hospital, Greektown Casino, The Michigan Citizen, Radio One, Hour Detroit and WKBD-UPN 50, the dinner raised more than $40,000 that will be used to support the organization's year round initiatives and annual scholarships to be awarded this summer to deserving high school seniors attending a 4-year accredited institutions of higher learning.
“For the last eight years, the scholarship dinner has helped over 55 students
with the financial support needed for their college education", said Caleb Rutledge,
vice president of Legacy Associates Foundation. "It takes a village to raise a
child and LAF is proud to be a part of a community that realizes the value of
supporting our organization and helping Detroit youth. We thank everyone who helped to make the event a success and ask that you continue to support our mission."
L.A.F. is seeking applications from Detroit area students to receive this scholarship that extends far beyond the monetary value. If you are a 12th grade high school student in the metro Detroit area, feel free to download, complete and submit the application on the left of this page.
Program Objective
The L.A.F. Annual Scholarship Dinner was created with the intent to allow constituents, friend and family of Legacy Associates Foundation to come together in support of our year-round efforts focused on the development of youth. Legacy members interact with and educate guests on the activities, programs, services, achievements and goals of the organization. This opportunity also allows us to provide special thanks and appreciation for the support that empowers the work of our membership, advisory board members and our community partners.
Program Goal
The goal of the Annual Scholarship Dinner is to raise the level of awareness
to the programs and services our organization provides within the community for
the benefit of youth. Additionally, we seek to raise the maximum amount of support dollars that will allow us to provide scholarships to high school seniors attending a 4-year, accredited institution of higher learning. Scholarships are awarded to deserving students during the summer months of each year. L.A.F. has a goal to raise over $50,000 for college-bound students at their 2007 fundraising dinner.
Event Audience
Community members, family, friends, students, civic and community organizations, past scholarship recipients, representatives of mentor groups, business leaders, and more. Essentially, the event is open to all who desire to support the overall mission and goals of our organization.
